Backed by support from the Canadian federal government through NSERC and northern electric power utilities (ATCO Electric Ltd., Northwest Territories Power Corporation, and Yukon Energy Corporation), and through academic partnerships with all three academic institutions (Arctic College, Aurora College, and Yukon University), the role of the Industrial Research Chair in Northern Energy Innovation is to establish an industry-driven research program that addresses the industry’s needs with wide dissemination of knowledge and technology transfer throughout the territories. The objective of the research is to be unbiased and independent while addressing the specific needs that are identified through consensus by northern energy industry. The identified areas of research interest include:
- Integration of renewable energy into isolated community grids
- Diesel efficiencies
- Demand-side management
- Residential and utility partnership
