The Willow Basket Project, supported by the Indigenous and Northern Relationship Development Fund, is an ambitious initiative with a primary goal of establishing a Summer Institute at the Yukon School of Visual Arts (YSOVA). As the project continues to develop, it faces challenges such as addressing potential skepticism from miners and securing the necessary financial support for large-scale artworks. However, it remains committed to its goal of creating a supportive framework for sustainable local art and building materials. This initiative not only holds promise for the Yukon community but also for broader circumpolar collaborations, building new knowledge, and understanding through innovative arts-based research.
A significant aspect of this project is its strong focus on collaboration and partnership. It has fostered essential relationships with various organizations and individuals, including the Global Arctic Leadership Initiative, Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin Heritage Department, Klondike Placer Miners Association, and more. These partnerships play a vital role in achieving the project’s objectives and ensuring its success.
The Willow Basket Project also aims to break down disciplinary boundaries by bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, including artists, placer miners, and community members. By integrating these perspectives, the project seeks to explore complex issues related to land reclamation, environmental sustainability, and cultural respect. This interdisciplinary approach is expected to lead to novel insights and innovative solutions.
