In 2024, The Yukon Citizens’ Assembly recommended changing the Yukon’s electoral system from first-past-the-post to ranked vote. A plebiscite on this question was posed to Yukon voters in November 2025 at the same time as the territorial election. Thanks to funding from the Scholarly Activity Grant, Dr. Sara McPhee-Knowles, Dr. Rebecca Major and Dr. Christoph Niessen from the University of Antwerp/UC Louvain will survey the broader Yukon public about their attitudes about the citizens’ assembly and their awareness of the citizens’ assembly’s work on electoral reform, and how this may have influenced their choice to vote in the plebiscite. Post-referendum surveys have been conducted in British Columbia and Ontario following their citizens’ assemblies and referenda on electoral reform, and this project has taken inspiration from some of those surveys and would contribute to that overall body of work.
