Climate Change Research is working in partnership with Yukon Seed and Restoration on an experimental soil microbiology treatment to be included in a YSR restoration project.  This initiative will investigate the application of a microbiology treatment extracted from a specifically designed compost set-up using local organic materials and inoculated with forest floor detritus and surface soil.  The extract will be applied in various methods to tree seedlings, collected seeds, soil, moss mats, and willow stakes as part of a restoration and erosion control project YSR is undertaking in two wildfire burned areas near Mayo.  These sites have been prioritized for reclamation due to sensitivity of one area to erosion, and concern regarding loss of tree diversity.  YukonU will create the compost and extracts, apply the extracts in the field, monitor and measure growth and plant health and microbial counts in soils, and results reporting. SAG funds will support travel, equipment purchase and student support in Year 1 of the project.
