This scholarly activity grant is supporting knowledge translation for the project “In Their Words: Experiences of the Vuntut Gwitchin during COVID-19”. Liris Smith (NPI) and Sherrie Frost (RA) will attend and present the findings of this partnered project between Yukon University and the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation (VGFN) at the International Congress of Circumpolar Health in Halifax in November 2024. This was a community-based participatory research project, during which thirty participants shared their in-depth experiences through guided conversations. This research was focused on describing the impacts of COVID-19 on the citizens of Old Crow, and to inform response strategies and recommendations to plan for future pandemic response policies and programs. The research team cultivated and invested in genuine relationships with Old Crow citizens to generate useful and relevant data. The project was supported by the guidance of a Knowledge Keeper/Elder and a research assistant who were both members of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation and has lived in the community. Five primary themes emerged during the analysis process: Ceremonial and social changes; Community supports; Guidelines and decisions; Wellness and illness management; and Getting COVID. The participants’ perspectives reflected their resiliency, self-determination, strong sense of community, and traditional ways of knowing and being. The uniqueness of their experiences may provide insights that can support other communities that are Indigenous, rural and remote in dealing with future pandemics.
