Genetics

Semester: Winter
Offered: 2021

Biol 202: Genetics

A core second-year biology course examining patterns of inheritance and gene functioning and the connection to phenotype. Mendelian patterns of inheritance and exceptions are discussed in detail. Molecular techniques used to examine transmission, expression and the ethics of genetic research and applications will be discussed. Mandatory lab sessions examine patterns of inheritance, and basic molecular techniques to examine genotypes and phenotypes.

Cell Biology

Semester: Fall
Offered: 2021

Biol 201: Cell Biology

A core second-year biology course examining the structure and function of cells, including functions of organelles, the flow of information from DNA to protein, the endomembrane system, cellular junctions, cell mobility, cell cycles and cancer cells.

Evolution and Biodiversity

Semester: Fall
Offered: 2021

Biol 101: Evolution and Biodiversity

Introductory biology course covering the scientific method, evolution and natural selection, ecology and the diversity of life. Mandatory lab sessions cover ecology (population and communicty ecology), evolution, and a survey of the diversity of life from Archaea to multicellular invertebrates, and and an introduction to vertebrates.

BIOL 102: Principles of Biology II

Semester: Winter
Offered: 2017

Biology 102 course description

A continuing course following BIOL 101, emphasizing
principles of wide application to all living organisms, including the
mechanism of inheritance, basic anatomy, functioning of the major
systems in living organisms and behaviour. A comparative approach to the
unity and diversity of organisms will be stressed. There is lab for this course (once per week).

BIOL 101: Principles of Biology

Semester: Fall
Offered: 2017

Biology 101 course description

A core introductory biology course emphasizing principles of wide application to all living organisms, including cell structure and function, the mechanism of inheritance, evolution, and adaptation to the environment. A comparative approach to the unity and diversity of organisms is stressed. This course transfers to most post-secondary institutions in Canada as (first semester) a first-year biology for biology majors. This course has a lab (once per week).
