Joanne Lewis has been the Executive Director of the Northern Institute of Social Justice (NISJ), Yukon College, since the institute opened in January 2010. She was involved in developmental work leading to the institute’s opening and was seconded from the Department of Justice, Government of Yukon, to direct the institute.

Experience

Government of Yukon, Department of Justice – Joanne served as a Policy Development Officer before she was seconded to Yukon College. Her work with the Department of Justice included participation on joint Yukon – Council of Yukon First Nation teams that conducted extensive public consultations on improving Yukon’s correctional system and the development of a new Corrections Act. Her work with the department began in the early 2000’s.

Yukon Housing Corporation – Joanne served as Director of Corporate Relations while the YHC’s director was seconded to the Department of Economic Development. Her work with YHC began in 1999 and ended in March 2001.

General Consulting – Joanne was an independent consultant between 1986 and the early 2000’s. She opened Lewis Consulting in 1986 and later served as Executive Assistant to Hon. Alan Nordling in the mid-1990s. She operated Joanne Lewis Consulting from 1996 – early 2000’s.

Government of Yukon – Joanne worked in the Executive Council Office and Government Leader’s Office between 1980 and 1985.

Community Involvement

Joanne is a member of the Rotary Club of Whitehorse, is president of Whitehorse Concert, and is volunteer facilitator for the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Family Caregiver Support Group.
